They are belt or gear driven air compressors. There are 3 types:

Roots-GMC,Wiend, B&M, Eaton

They basically move more air than the engine can consume, the extra air is compressed in the intake manifold creating boost. Instant boost, not eff. at mid/high boost <12psi. A lot larger than screw type for same power.

Screw superchargers- Whipple, Kenne bell, lysholm - looks similar to a roots but are more efficient than roots and compress air internally. Instant boost good to 25-30psi boost.

Last type is centrifugal- Vortech, procharger, rotex, etc. - mounts to the front of the engine(like a alternator) can use stock manifold, lighter/smaller than the others. They compress air internally. Their boost builds with RPM(example 2psi @ 3000rpms, 4 @4000, 6@5000, 8psi at 6000rpms). Can use air/air inter cooler like a turbocharger, other only have air/water inter coolers avail. Most can run max boost levels comparable to screw type(20-30psi) but some newer larger units can run up to 50psi.

Superchargers raise the pressure of air intake so that more air is forced into the combustion chamber of the engine. In this way it revs faster, consequently increasing the speed of charge.

A better description:

A supercharger creates higher pressure in the air intake. Since in an internal combustion engine, the fuel-to-air ratio is constant, it translates to a larger amount of fuel and air in each power stroke of the engine. More fuel and air creates a more powerful reaction, and therefore greater horsepower. A supercharger is identical to a turbocharger in function. The only difference is where the device gets its power. A supercharger is mechanically driven by the engine (ie: belt, chain, drive-shaft), whereas a turbocharger is powered by the exhaust from the engine.

Does a Mercedes clk compressor have a supercharger?

Yes, kompressor is the German word for supercharger. A supercharger works by forced induction (compressed air) being supplied to the engine and is powered via an engine driven belt, a turbo works similar but is charged by exhaust gases

What is a supercharger?

A supercharger, basically feeds more air into the cylinders to drive the pistons, so more combustion with the fuel is possible, and therefore more power. It is driven mechanically (directly from the engine) so it works straight way, opposed to a turbocharger which works from the exhaust pressure, and suffers 'turbo lag'. A supercharger is a device that makes the pressure of the fuel-air mixture in an internal combustion engine go up. A supercharger allows the engine to be more efficient.

How do you make a 2008 Mitsubishi eclipse faster?

turbo or supercharger works great ;) nothing like the feeling of being boosted :D

Turbocharger vs Supercharger?

what are you asking? the difference between them is that a supercharger works through the intake side of the engine and a turbocharger works on the exhaust no, dude. The supercharger and turbo charger both are forced induction meaning that they both work on the intake. the difference is that the supercharger is belt driven and the turbo charger is gas driven meaning that the supercharger is connected to the belt system of your engine, creating instant power as you accelerate as it is driven off the system it is boosting. the turbo charger works off of your exhaust gas as mentioned earlier and is also affective however it takes a short while for the exhaust gas to turn the turbines thus creating something called turbo lag. if you are asking which is better. anything under 3500 cc and 6 cylinders i would turbo charge, anything above i would supercharge. but you can do either to any engine.

What supercharger should you get for a silvia s13?

I know for a fact that a SC14 from a 1G GZE Toyota engine works with an s13 sr20de (non turbo).

How you know when you supercharger is gone bad?

The most common and normal signs will be: * Oil leakage from the supercharger * Supercharger making a knocking noise * Lower or no boost pressure * Oil not present inside the supercharger

The C230 Kompressor already has a supercharger on it from the factory. The word Kompressor means Supercharger.

What is better a supercharger or a procharger?

Procharger is a supercharger. It is a brand of centrifugal superchargers.

What type of oil is used in the grad prix gtp supercharger?

gm supercharger oil for the supercharger. any oil you prefer for the engine oil.

Where at on the engine does the supercharger fluid go?

Depending on the supercharger, it will require a special blend of synthetic oil. This synthetic oil normally is located in the supercharger itself. Most superchargers will have a hex nut located on the front of the supercharger. This area is used to drain and fill up the supercharger oil. You cannot use just any synthetic oil, you will have to use "Supercharger Oil"
