It is not material, it is the volume of all the combustion cylinders.
That is the total of volume of all the cylinders of that engine.
A 1.3 liter engine means that it has a combustion capacity of 1.3 liters. It has 1.3 liters of engine displacement or volume displaced in the cylinders by the pistons.
Total displacement, usually in cubic inches or liters.
The "volume" of an engine (4.2 liters in this question) is the volume of the cylinders in which the explosions take place that generate the engine power.
2.0 liter engine means that all cylinders combined displace 2.0 cubic liters of volume.
Five liter engine refers to the actual size of the engine, measured in liters rather than cubic inches. It also relates to how large the cylinders are on the inside of the engine
A Chevy 327 cubic inch engine is the equivalent to 5.3 liters. This is the size of the combustion chambers in the cylinders.
The number of cylinders alone does not determine the displacement. If someone desired to, they could make an engine with less than a liter of displacement with however many cylinders they pleased. Likewise, heavy duty trucks tend to use an inline six engine, with displacement ranging from ten to 16 liters.
First, there is a difference in the Volume that the cylinders displace. The larger the engine, the greater its cubic inches or liter volume. Second, 2 liter engines are almost always 4 cylinders and 3 Liter engines are almost always 6 cylinders. However, Porsche made a large 4 cylinder engine for its 944 series, which I believe was 2.7 Liters. Five cylinder engines may be between 2 and 3 Liters and are intermediate size engines.
2700cc is the displacement of the engine. Typically, the higher the displacement, the more cylinders the engine will have. 2.7 liters (which is 2700cc) would make for a larger 4 cylinder engine, or a smaller 6 cylinder engine. Though it would be rare, it would be a good size for a 5 cylinder engine. Other configurations are possible also.
