Put backing soda in a graduated cylinder or something else that has flat sides and no taper. Take a can lid that fits snuglyinside the cylinder, not over it, and drill a small hole in the center. Put the can lid into the cylinder and over the backing soda. Drip a little vinegar into the hole, and the lid should begin to rise to the top of the cylinder.

The raising of the lid represents the reaction doing work, which is mechanical energy. If you wanted to get creative, you could put something on the lid, that when it got to the top, it would ring a bell or something.
