Electric heating boilers can be a useful alternative to gas and other conventional furnaces. LPG and oil-fired boilers are also very efficient. Biomass boilers are also becoming popular.
Are there any motorized vehicles or gas fired furnaces? Then yes you are using fossil fuels.

This fuse is for the auxiliary fuel fired heater fitted to diesel models. The diesel engine does not warm up quickly in cold conditions and an auxiliary heater is used to burn a small amount of fuel to provide some heating to the cabin whilst the engine warms up.
The main fuel IS diesel fuel for both both trains and ships, most freight trains run on electric motors that are powered in most cases by diesel engined generators, while passenger trains are powered by diesel, or directly from an overhead power line, or electrified rail. Trains of course used to be powered by steam, fired by wood or coal. old sailing ships obviously used to be powered by wind and/or manpower. Later they were powered by steam, usually coal fired, and then by diesel fuel.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Actually the average diesel engine can operate better on natural gas than on diesel only since the emissions issues are dramatically reduced. It can run fine if the diesel is dual fueled with at least 5% of the normal diesel fuel input (10-15% is even better). The amount of diesel co-fired is a factor of the economy and emissions sought by the conversion. In fact, we operate diesel engines on syn gas derived from wood and many other types of biomass via gasification. These systems can produce stationary mechanical power, electrical power or just heat while being co-fired with diesel, waste oil, trap grease, vegetable oil and others. Bioten Power and Energy Group
Coal is burned mostly in fireboxes in coal fired power plants. Coal is also sometimes burned in furnaces in industrial facilities that refine and process various metals. Coal is also roasted (heated without oxygen so that it does not burn) to produce coke, which is widely used in steel mills (mostly as a carbon source and fuel in blast furnaces).
