There are molecules that form into certain atom. Those atoms form other things like cells, and smaller than that (while also inside the cell) is DNA. The DNA tells the cell what to form. All cells have the same DNA, but certain genes are turned on and off. That's what gives it its function. As for shape, the plant cell is the only one with a distinct shape, a block.
