The Swine Flu in 1976 was a disease much like our flus, but tougher - like the one we have today. Except the one hitting now is supposed to be more of a respiratory disease. I know someone who was affected by the swine flu back then because of a mistake the doctors made - they injected some people with the LIVE virus. That's how my teacher got it, and she says it was the closest she's ever been to dying, only because it weakened her sooooo much. Today's swine flu is doing the same thing, and those with weak immune systems and/or bad healthcare do have a chance of dying from it. Anyways, that's a little bit of info for you. Hope it helped!

The most famous early swine flu outbreak in humans was in 1976 at Fort Dix, New Jersey where four soldiers who were previously healthy contracted the virus and developed pneumonia with other symptoms of the flu. One died as a result. The virus was thought to have circulated approximately a month in the close quarters of the group in basic training but not outside the group, then it disappeared.

Because it had killed a young healthy soldier, a vaccine was developed and many people took it without any problems (I did). But it also had an unusual number of people who developed Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) and some died from the neurological disorder. It was linked at the time to the vaccine, however it was never actually proved by scientific study that the vaccine was the cause. GBS can be caused by a flu virus itself.

There was some speculation that the vaccine was also contaminated and that is what caused the GBS outbreak. It was enough of a problem, however, that the vaccine was withdrawn and immunizations were discontinued. As it turned out the flu infected only a small number of men with only one death, and more people did get sick and die with problems that seemed to be related to the vaccine.

Today we have a different strain of flu and we have entirely different methods of making vaccines for the flu. The current pandemic flu vaccine is made the new way, just like the seasonal flu shots that have proven over decades to have a very high safety record.

As of the 2011-2012 flu season, it is still among the types of influenza that are in circulation and that is why the vaccine for it is still being included in the seasonal flu shot in the US. It is no longer at pandemic rates, and is more isolated in outbreaks across the world, but it is not gone and is not expected to be totally gone from the wild for some time, if ever. To rid it entirely, like smallpox, we would have to make sure that the overwhelming majority of people in the world are immunized against it.

It was offered in the US for whomever wanted the shot. It was recommended that health care workers get the vaccine. I took the shot since I was a nurse working in a hospital at the time.
