It depends on the species of sea turtle, and their age. Gender makes no difference to the size of sea turtles. The smallest is the Kemp's ridley, which has a shell that is normally a bit less than 3 ft long at adulthood. The largest, full grown sea turtle is the Leatherback species. They are the soft shelled species, and have a shell of about 6 ft long usually, but can become larger, as much as 8 ft long. Sea turtles are not capable of retracting their flippers, limbs, or head, as so many other species of turtles do in order to help protect themselves. Their shell is enough room for their vital organs only, no spare room for tucking limbs, or ducking heads in emergencies. This is believed to be the case because they swim most of their lives, and need to be streamlined.
