The CSS Virginia had two 2" plates backed up with two 4" layers of wood backed up with a 12" thickness of wood. So a total of 4 inches of iron and 20 inches of wood.

The monitor vs. Merrimack took place in 1862.
If the question asks only about the crews of the two ships, the Monitor had a crew of 59, and the Merrimack had 320, but the entire two-day Battle of Hampton Roads involved thousands more. The Merrimack was joined by five CSN gunboats, and there were five USN warships at Hampton Roads. [The Merrimack sank two of them before the Monitor arrived.]
The Virginia, or, more commonly, the Merrimack, was the Confederate ironclad built from the hull of the previously damaged Merrimack Confederate warship. The Confederates raised the former Merrimack and sheared off the masts. They then covered the deck with two layers of sheet iron. A huge ram was attached, and the Virginia was then armed with no less than fifteen cannon. Starting with no navy at all, the south had seized the initiative and forged the most powerful naval weapon in history.Saturday March 8th was wash day for the U.S. Navy, and all ships were unprepared for the onslaught. The Merrimack slid into the harbor, and headed straight for the U.S.S. Cumberland. Although the Cumberland opened fire, the shots bounced harmlessly off. Soon after it sank in shallow water. After the Cumberland, the U.S.S. Congress was set on fire, and the U.S.S. Minnesota was driven aground. After this the Virginia fell back for the night. In response to the Merrimack, the controversial Monitor was given birth. The Union's Monitor was also sheathed in iron. It's decks barely cleared the water. A revolving gun turret was installed amidships. Over 48 patented inventions were forged on the Monitor, which quickly overshadowed the achievement of the Merrimack.March 9th, the Merrimack returned, but the Union ironclad, the Monitor , was waiting. The two dueled for five hours until the Merrimack k ran aground and lost it's ram. The ships were so close, they collided 5 times in the fury. The Merrimack then fled, leaving the Monitor as victor.
On 9 March 1862, the Confederate ironclad Merrimack and the Union ironclad Monitor did battle near Hampton Roads, Virginia in the Atlantic

The first ironclad for the Confederacy was the CSS Virginia. It had been the USS Merrimack and previously been left for "dead" when Confederate troops assaulted the Union base at Norfolk, Virginia. The Union burned it lest it fall into Confederate hands. Southern engineers salvaged the hull of the Merrimack and rebuilt it with thick iron sides, and added her with canons on each side.
If you are referring to the USS Merrimack II, she was a typical 40-gun frigate and would run a crew of about 350 men. If you are talking about the USS Virginia, the Confederate iron-clad that was built on the remains of the hull of the USS Merrimack II, she had a compliment of 320 men.
The Confederates took the hull of the USS Merrimack that had been burned to the waterline and sunk in Norfolk shipyard. They salvaged the engines and used it to create the CSS Virginia by creating a superstructure of thick wood and steel plates.
