Archaeologists have repeatedly confirmed that Jericho had been abandoned long before the time of the biblical story, and that there were no longer any walls around the former city. This is consistent with the strong scholarly consensus that the Israelites did not really invade Canaan, but were themselves rural Canaanites who left the region of the rich coastal cities and migrated peacefully into the hitherto sparsely populated Canaanite hinterland. The conquest of Jericho is part of a rich tapestry of legends built up centuries after the supposed event.
