The "tree" size has nothing to do with how tight to girth your saddle - what's more important, is "how" you tighten the girth.

After you have groomed your horse, placed the saddle pad and saddle on your horse, you are now ready to attach the girth. It is recommend to use a girth that has elastic on both ends of the girth, this allows for ease of girthing and allows expansion of the horses ribcage during riding.

Attach the girth on the right side of the saddle first and then reach under the horse and bring the girth up to the left side and tighten the girth only enough to keep the saddle on while the horse is standing.

Bridle your horse and hand walk your horse for a few minutes, be sure to circle in both directions (left and right), stop your horse and tighten the girth snug enough that this saddle will stay in place when you mount. Ride at a walk for 5 or 10 minutes, stop and recheck your girth and tighten the girth again as needed to be snug enough to stay in place. If at any time during your ride, you feel the saddle shift, you will need to re-tighten the girth.

It's important that the girth is tight enough to keep the saddle in place, but not so tight the horse is uncomfortable. Check to see that you are placing equal weight in each stirrup while riding.

How can you tell what size saddle I need?

The stirrup iron should half a quarter to half inch of space on either side of your foot. The stirrup leather should be adjusted depending on the sport you're participating in. Dressage requires a long straight leg, jumping uses a short stirrup leather, and general or trail riding uses a length in between dressage and jumping. To adjust for these make sure the leather is attached to the saddle and then pull it out and away, it should be roughly as long as your arm and may need to be adjusted up or down a couple of holes for various disciplines.

How do you ride a saddle?

a saddle is a basic piece of tack you use when riding a horse, and you can get them in many different types (e.g. general purpose saddle, jumping saddle and dressage saddle etc.). Attached to the saddle, there is a metal ring called a stirrup either side. You sit on the saddle and put your feet in the stirrups to secure your position. you hold your elbows parallel to your feet and hold on to the reins with your hands. when sat in the saddle you should sit up tall, keep your legs bent and hold your hands low, with your thumbs on top. Hope this helps!

Do you need to be able to trot canter and jump before you do dressage?

Does Dressage and Classical Dressage have an age limit of how long you can do Dressage as a career?

Not really but you should stick to a training program as closely as possible. A rider can compete as long as they are able to ride. A horse should be brought along slowly to avoid problems later on. Classical dressage is more taxing on the horse and full training should not begin until the horse is 5 years old or older. 'Basic' Dressage can begin at age 3 years and progress from there until the horse is ready to retire.

Does an adjusted saddle touch the horse's withers?

NO. The saddle should not touch the withers.

Do you have to plait up for a dressage test show?

Yes, you should plait your horse's mane and tail for lower level dressage. Grooming your horse and plaiting up shows respect to the judges. In higher level dressage, you may not need to, although you should always check with your instructor and the rules of the show. You will see if you watch videos of high level dressage test horses are unplaited and unbraided.

What type off saddles do the royal Canadian mounted police use?

Stubben saddles originating in Germany. John Stubben came over from Germany and agreed to modify his saddle cut. This produced a more versatile saddle as they could not afford both a jumping and dressage saddle. Stubben named the first ones "Kanada Model". They have long skirts/flaps, fit the majority of their horses and help place the rider's leg where it is functional. The RCMP still employs a saddler who keeps the saddlery and leather equipment in good repair, and also, with the exception of the basic saddle, makes all the leather equipment.

How tight should the girth be done up when you first put the saddle on?

There is no known measurement for the tightness of a horses girth. All horses are different sizes and should have their girths tighted accordingly. To adjust the girth to correctly fit your horse you place the two outside Girth Straps into the buckles and tighten it until you can only fit 2 fingers between the horse and the girth. When you do this you will feel pressure. It is important to tighten the girth correctly as if it is too lose the saddle can slide forwards and backwards creating sores known as saddle sores. If the Girth is too tight you can interfere with the horses breathing as it can restrict the movement of the horses lungs. I hope this info is useful..... have fun !

What should you look for in an ill fitting saddle?

The saddle shouldn't be touching or rubbing on the withers at all. You should easily be able to put some fingers between the saddle pad and the front of the saddle. The seat should be wide or narrow enough to fit your horse's back correctly. The base should not be too curved or straight for your horse's back. Basically, a saddle shouldn't restrict the horse's movement in any way.

Do you have to put the saddle on the ground when you take it off?
