These engines are completely identical except for the crank and rods. The pistons are even the same. You can convert a 360 to a 390 by just replacing the crank and rods with 390 parts. The 360 was not a good engine. If you have a 360 convert it. The only way I know to tell them apart is to test the TDC. 360's come with the piston WAY down in the bore at TDC. They have zero quench, and zero compression. The pistons are close to 1/8" down in the hole at TDC! Converting to a 390 adds more stroke, brings the pistons right up to the deck at TDC, and provides for a nice compression increase over the dismal 8 to 1 of the 360. So if at TDC you have a 1/8 clearance, you have a 360. Of course you will have to remove a head to check this. Another thing is that if the engine came out of a truck it is more than likely a 360. If it has a 2 barrel carb it is more than likely a 360.
