If you are constructing an extension cord make sure that the cap ends go on the right end of the extension cable. Match the wire cable end when looking at it, to the proper pin configuration of the plug. A non locking plug will be a 6-30P or a locking plug will be a L6-30P. On a 6-30P plug (cap), black wire to the left blade, white wire to the Y terminal and the green wire to the G terminal. On a L6-30P plug, black wire to the X terminal, white wire to the Y terminal and the ground wire to the G terminal.

Looking at the end of the cable it should be matched to this configuration. If it doesn't, look at the other end of the cable. No wires should cross when connecting to the blades on the plug, if they do you have the wrong end of the extension cable and the polarity will be wrong when plugged into a receptacle.

Extension cord construction

If you are constructing an extension cord make sure that the ends go on the right end of the cable. Match the wire end when looking at it, to the proper pin configuration of the plug. Looking at the plug from the blade side directly on you should see a larger blade (silver) on the right, smaller (brass) blade on the left and a U shaped ground blade on the bottom. The white wire connects under the right (silver) coloured screw, the black wire connects under the left (brass) coloured screw and the green wire under the green ground screw. Looking at the end of the cable it should be matched to this configuration. If it doesn't look at the other end of the cable. No wires should cross when connecting to the blades on the plug, if they do you have the wrong end of the cable.

Extension cord construction

If you are constructing an extension cord make sure that the ends go on the right end of the cable. A 220 volt cord is constructed the same as a 110 volt cord. The extension cord cable has the same voltage insulation, rated at 300 volts or larger cable rated at 600 volts, for both working voltages of either 110 or 220 volts. Match the wire end when looking at it, to the proper pin configuration of the plug. Looking at the plug from the blade side directly on you should see two tandem blades (silver) screw on the left, and a (brass) screw on the right and a U shaped ground blade on the bottom. The white wire connects under the left (silver) coloured screw, the black wire connects under the right (brass) coloured screw and the green wire under the green ground screw. Looking at the end of the cable it should be matched to this configuration. If it doesn't look at the other end of the cable. No wires should cross when connecting to the blades on the plug, if they do you have the wrong end of the cable.

What is the extension wire used for on an outdoor gourmet Triton gas grill?

According to the grill guy at Academy, the extension wire is used as an alternate way to light the grill. Clip a match into the end of the extension wire, light the match, and then use the extension wire to light your grill without placing your hand too close to the burners. Makes sense, but I would suggest they rename this part "manual grill lighter extension wire."

Can a microwave be plugged into an extension cord?

Yes, as long as the extension cord is rated for the load. Most microwave ovens use 1000W or more, some less. A standard two wire extension cord would be unsafe. There are, however, extension cords which have the proper gauge of wire and the necessary 3-prong outlets which a microwave would need to operate safely.

What is the extension cord with 3 prong could be used for?
