# jack up the passenger side of car # remove wheel # remove plastic inner fender (two pieces) # loosen belt from tentioner, pull belt up out of way # there are two 10 mm bolts that hold the tentioner to the engine (note the top one is hard to reach take your time) # when I removed my top bolt, the end threads of the aluminum housing stripped. If this happens to you get a 8 mm 1.25 tap to repair the threads. # replace tentioner and rethread serpentine belt # put everything back together tools needed: 10 mm sockets and wrench, 14 mm wrench (old tentioner nut), 15 mm wrench (new tentioner nut)
The way it fits around and on top of the pulleys.

When I had mines done they called it a serpentine belt and the installation was quick and minimal under $100.00 including labor and the belt.AnswerAll cars have drive belts. If, however the car only has one belt and it "snakes" up and over the pulleys it is termed a "serpentine" (snake) belt because of the way it is routed around the pulleys. Older cars have usually 2 or 3 belts that do not overlap or go over/under the pulleys. The belts simply go around the outside of the pulleys and are tensioned by a manual adjustment. Serpentine belts usually have an automatic/no-adjustable tensioner for the belt. Hope this helps!
It is the large belt going around all the pulleys on the front of the engine.

Begin by loosening the tensioner pulley on your 1999 Oldsmobile Cutlass. Put your serpentine belt around the pulleys. Tighten the serpentine belt with the tensioner pulley.
Check around the hood and fenders, there is usually a label with the diagram
Usually this means one of the pulleys is locked up. The belt winds around multiple pulleys, when one locks up it doesn't rotate and the friction is burning away the belt, giving you the smoking and squealing.
The serpentine belt can be replaced by finding the belt tension pulley. This pulley has a bolt in the center and when you turn it the belt will loosen and you can take it off the pulleys. Look for a diagram sticker under the hood or make your own so you remember how the new belt wraps around the pulleys.
