There are a couple of options for software that supposedly tells you whether a site is reliable or not (listed below), but these aren't perfect, so read the reviews and make your own decision on whether you want to download them or not. The site I have links to are at CNET, and that is a known reliable site people go to when they want to download software because they check the software for any spyware before putting it out for people to use.
None of these solutions are perfect, but getting one is probably better than nothing. If you already have McAffee as your virus software, odds are you already have the Site Advisor working.
Best bet is to just evaluate the web site and decide if it looks professional or not. For me, if a site looks like they put a lot of money into developing the site, odds are it's not a scam. Most scammers don't want to work that hard.
