Tell him and tell him why. So not soft sell it. Do not pad it or preface it. If there is a reason, give it to him. Then, tell him how you feel about him. If you love him, tell him you do. If you want him to succeed, tell him how you are going to do that, then do it. He is in a place where he either faces reality, or everything will consume him. If he is lost, be there to help him find his way back, but know he has to do the work. Let him do the work, but encourage him. Celebrate his successes, and help him to learn from his short falls. Just be real.
