If they are lying about personal issue's of their own, disassociate yourself with them, you dont have to talk to them about their personal stuff if you dont want to. If they are lying about co-workers and work and creating work related problems including leading to a hostile environment, then get a few coworkers together and go to the supervisor or boss and explain your plight. If this person is making an uncomfortable workplace on a whole, they need to go.

If the coworker is still adamant in his or her information, don't push it because it would be unprofessional to bicker and fight in front of a customer/visitor. Either wait for that person to walk away and discuss it and maybe you can chase them down if its that important, or discuss it with your superior if you think the coworker is being stubborn about issues like this.
