No they are not. Brown recluse are some of the most poisonous spiders in the USA. Wood spiders, though can be considered close in appearance, are actually harmless (fright and allergic reactions aside).

If it was a pretty descent size spider it could very likely be a wolf spider. They would hide in things like that and they are very fast. I used to get them in my old house. They are not dangerous but can be creepy looking.
There is no kind of waterproof wood. The way wood becomes waterproof is if it is treated with some kind of substance. You are going to have to look and see what wood you like and then go out and buy some wood treatment or you may get aids from sitting on it.
Cedar wood is poisonous to some chickens because if they inhale the scent of it, it is really poisonous and the chicken will get congested, and sometimes they won't be able to breath, and they die! :-(
Well I'm not any kind of expert but black cherry wood is poisonous to horses so I'm sure its not very healthy for humans either, but I suppose unless your the kind of person that likes to eat Puffer fish also because they are deadly if you eat the wrong part!
