The normal force is what prevents an object from falling through the ground.

The force of gravity is equal to the product of the mass and acceleration due to gravity, so the ground that the object sits on must apply an equal force in the opposite direction (Newton's Third Law), other wise the object would fall through.

What is normal force?

Normal force is the force of a surface acting on an object( the normal force is perpendicular to the plane of contact). This force is directly related to the force of gravity, as the third law of newton state that when a force is applied to an object it will react with an equal force in the opposite direction. So when an object is placed on a surface, the force of gravity is acting on it (pulling it down), but the is object remain in place due to the normal force (which is pulling up on the object). In addition, a change to the force of gravity will result in the same change to the force of normal, to allow an object to remain stationary.

How do you measure friction when not knowing the normal force?

Well you can always work out the normal force... if the object is on a horizontal surface... The normal force is equal to the mass of the object × gravity (9.81). If the object is on an incline, you have to get the component of weight which is equivalent to the Normal, in most cases it is Normal = mass × gravity × cos(theta), theta being the angle of inclination.

What is the product of mass and force due to gravity?

The product of (mass) x (force) has no physical significance. The product of (mass) x (acceleration due to gravity) is the force due to gravity, which we usually call "weight".

How does a planet gets its force of gravity?

The force of gravity of a planet is a product of its mass.

How is force and friction related?

The Force of friction is equal to the coefficient of friction times the normal force. Since normal force is equal to mass times the acceleration of gravity (9.8 m/s2), the force of friction is directly proportional to the mass.

To stop the table in your class falling through the floor what must the floor do against the force of gravity pulling the table down?

The floor must exert a force equal to that of the force exerted on the desk from gravity. This force is called a "normal force"

What is the force of gravity in the surface of Mars?

Mars has a force of gravity equal to 3.7m/s2.

Is gravity the force applied up or down on an object?

Gravity pulls things downwards, so it is pointed downwards. If an object is resting on something (like a book resting on a table) an equal force will point upwards and that force is known as the normal force.

Examples of normal force?

What force acts the opposite of gravity?

The opposite "force" from gravity would be anti-gravity, which is not an observed physical force. The opposition to gravity is normally by a reactive or repulsive force that overcomes gravity. The opposite of experiencing gravity is experiencing "weightlessness" (which is freefall within a gravitational influence, such as in an orbiting spacecraft or inside a falling aircraft or vehicle).
