Best Answer

In late May when the leaves are going brown/yellow. Wash the bulbs, let them dry over a period of a week or so, put into something like an onion sack, store in a cool dry place until ready to plant later

I used to grow calla lilys, they are rhizome which means they will divide by themselves, and grow "daughter" bulbs attached to the parent bulb. If you want, you can break off separate pieces that are loosly joined, or cut them, but be careful, the bulbs must be big enough to survive on their own, all the bulbs must have an "eye" to grow, and make sure if you cut them, the raw edge is not too big (and you use a clean sharp knife) otherwise the bulb could rot.

After the foliage has died back in summer lift the bulbs and allow them to dry off then separate the large flowering size for replanting in late August( Northern Hemisphere) and heel in the small ones in a nursery bed to put on at least another years growth to reach flowering size.

You can dig up the bulbs and separate them into individual bulbs for replanting next season. The smaller ones might not bloom for a season or two.

You can do this when they obviously become overcrowded, every five to ten years, Divide the clumps of bulbs in early summer after the foliage has turned brown
