The only adjustment on my LX178 is a spring hook that is located on the sheet metal under the right rear fender. If you need to tighten the belt a little, you can pull the spring back to the rear position.
If it's already in the back position and the belt is still too loose, you'll need a new belt. I'd get a JD belt. The belts U get at the Auto Parts Store don't last long.

There is no spring...The answer above the owner obviously does not own a 178. The only correct way to tighten the idler pulley is to remove the belt guard from around the idler pulley then loosen the idler pulley bolt. Slide the pulley forward ( there will only be about a 3/4" slot to slide). To do this you first remove the deck and make sure the brake is on and locked in the park position to relieve tension off of the belt. You could also shorten the rod that connects to the top of the hydrostat drive to the brake linkage but this is not advisable because you can cause the tractor to drift when in a neutral state. If your pulley is all the way forward then it is advisable to buy a new belt.

The 125 model has an automatic double pulley spring tension setup that keeps the belt tight. If the belt is loose you most likely need a new belt.
There is an idler pully next to the PTO clutch. Loosen the nut and slide the pully to loosen or tighten the belt. Hope this helps
Well Home Depots line is really cool take flat bar pulley spindle and spring make it so it pulls opposite of chassis rail other then that sell it

The belts could be too loose or too tight, pulleys are wore out, belt is not routed correctly, spindles are binding, belt is grabbing a guide tab or linkages and causing it to break, ldler has a bad bearing or is not engaged properly.
