Scholars believe there were two main branches of Christianity, each of which probably represented about half the Christian population at the time. The first branch was the Catholic-Orthodox Church. Then other group was the Gnostic Christians, which consisted of at least several belief systems or denominations.
Gnostic Christianity appears to have begun to go into decline later in the third century, but its fate was sealed early in the fourth century by Emperor Constantine, who refused to recognise it. Gnostocism continued in some more remote parts of the eastern empire for several centuries, and eventually re-emerged in modified form as Catharism in southern France during the Middle Ages.
