Who said this? Was this from the movie (film) "Sniper" starring Tom Berenger? "Snipers" are the current fad in America...sniper rifles, sniper websites, sniper characters on television ("NCIS" and possibly "Bones" are all ex-snipers...Hollywood types of course (meaning fiction), sniper books, sniper schools, and new powerful sniper rifles such as the BMG .50 caliber (BMG=Browning Machine Gun) and 20mm.

South Africa's 20mm sniper rifle isn't totally new, the Japanese Army in WWII used one for anti-tank roles.

A "military" sniper was (used to be, still is, what ever people want to call it these days) a "military sharpshooter" or "military marksman" or "expert rifleman", whose function was to kill enemy officers, radio operators, machinegunners (crew served weapons), any leader, and anyone else that was important enough to warrant "selective killing."

Today's "FAD" snipers (mostly fake, over rated, and extremely over commercialized) are "trained" to use super highly sophisticated firearms (rifles) that are nearly far TOO HEAVY to carry in combat.

Combat=Carrying the weapon up a mountain, thru jungles, up hills, and thru swamps.

Not Computer Combat=Helicopter emplaced tri-pod/bi-pod sniper & rifle. Extremely low lack of walking, hill climbing, and sleeping days on end in the wilderness. Helicoptered in, helicoptered out. Computerized rifle, range finder, scopes, GPS, (no map rading skills), etc.

There's a difference between shooting a precision instrument (today's so-called sniper rifles) and hunting down and killing an enemy soldier with a rifle.

1. One simply requires the skills to use optics and computers (pushing a button/pulling a trigger).

2. The other actually requires the brutal strength to survive in the bush and then kill.

Who was the antagonist in the sniper?

There are 2. the other sniper is one of them and the war is another. of course the other sniper is the antagonist because he and the sniper are fighting against each other but the reason why the Irish Civil War is also the antagonist is because the war is basically causing the problem. is there were no war, then no one would die from the war like the other sniper (the sniper's brother whom he had killed.) Hope this helps

carlos hathcock a sniper for the u.s. army i think he was ranked a sergant The above information is incorrect, Carlos Hathcock although an amazing sniper achieving 93 confirmed kills during the Vietnam war was not old enough to partake in the Korean war.
