Some heat but not too much. I would recommend buying a hermit crab heating pad or a heating light. Just be careful because it could lower the humidity slightly, so you might have to spray the tank more often.

∙ 14y agoMost crabbers use heat lamps. The size and wattage can vary depending on the size of your tank. Some crabbers use under tank heaters or UTH's. These heaters can be finicky and once you adhere them to your tank, you cannot remove them.

∙ 12y agoIt's best if you have a temperature gradient going from about 75-85F (have a hot end and a cool end of the tank), but if you are looking to keep your tank at one temperature, it should be at 80F.

Sand, or fine gravel on the bottom of an aquarium, or a screen cage is ideal. You need to keep the cage temperature at least at 72 degrees Fahrenheit. The humidity level is best a 70%. The habitat for you hermit crab should have a moist warm feel, this will keep the gills of the hermit crab in check. Keep a spray bottle of fresh water handy and periodically spray your hermit crab habitat with it.

I wouldn't reccommmend a heating pad for a hermit crab, but would you like to know what does keep them warm and cozy? Just put their cage on top of the drying machine! I do it for my crab, and he has lived for a very long time. The heat rises into their habitat creating a climate very similar to their habitat in the wild.

While hermit crabs do need heat, a heat rock is not a very good solution. Hermit Crabs can and will overheat themselves on a heat rock. A heat rock can get up to 100+ degrees, which is WAY to hot for a hermit crab. A better solution is to use an under tank heater pad, and mount it on the side of the tank. 2 small pads covering a corner is even better. You should make sure and have a cool side and warm side for your hermit crabs. Maintain about 80 degrees f on the warm side, and about 70 degrees f on the cool side and your hermit crab should be just fine. Keep the humidity at above 75% as well.

It is safe to take a hermit crab out of the tank as long as the temperature is warm and the humidity is high. They can't go for "walks" like you would take a dog, but they can wander on a table or in the bathtub with careful supervision.

There are some specific tools that are essential when caring for a hermit crab. * A see transparent, lit aquarium. * A sponge for it to drink water. { simply wet the sponge until dripping water } * a food dish and food. { found at local pet markets } * a larger shell for it to switch to, in the event that it grows. If your hermit crab is inactive for more than 24 hours, try holding the crab faced toward the bottom of a flat surface {usually in a warm area} if you cannot feel movement try leaving the containment area in the warm surface for 2-4 hours and if it still inactive, your hermit crab could very possibly be dead.
