America was never in the League of Nations- Congress refused to ratify the treaty that created it. While certainly a very important country, at that point in history the US wasn't a "superpower"; however, the US's absence from the League was certainly felt. Not having one of the more powerful countries in the world as a member really hurt the League's ability to get anything done- and, it wound up not really doing a lot. When Japan invaded Manchuria (a region in China) in 1931, the League did nothing, and other aggressions would follow (Italy invading Ethiopia, and Germany's invasions of pretty much everyone).
