Athens were a Direct Democracy but Americans were a Representative Democracy.

Adult athen men were allowed to vote but US citizens male and female age 18 and over were allowed to vote.

It was not a universal democracy, only male adults citizens could vote and the democracy involved decisions made directly by votes cast at public, assembly meetings open ALL the electorate.

Modern democracies involve the election of representative to the the legislative chamber, only very rarely is the referendum model used.

During the radical democracy period of the second half of the 5th Century BCE, the citizens met in fortnightly assembly and discussed and voted on all political and legal issues, and the Council of 500 carried out their decisions. The pharaohs and kings made the decisions in concert with their councils, and these were implemented without referral or question.
