Aside from Australians who had enlisted into the British military prior to the outbreak of WWII, they really weren't - they were pretty tied up in the Pacific Theatre of Operations.

No war has occured on Australian soil. But Australia has been "at war" eg WWI, WWII etc.
Australia had long answered the call to support Britain, becoming involved in everything from the Maori Wars, Sudan, South Africa, World War 1 - South Australia even offering a contingent for the Zulu War, all of which did not threaten Australia until Japan's entry to WW2.
WWII
Australia sent its navy, air force and the AIF overseas. The army part ended up in the Middle East.
They both got involved at the wars beginning. HOWEVER. New Zealand fought primarily in Europe. Australia on the other hand was unable to send many of its armies to Europe because Japan was invading on Australia's doorstep. To which Australia raised an army of over 1.1 million soldiers to fight off the invasion.
Asia, North and South America, Europe, Australia and Africa were all involved in World war 1.
It was a world war because it involved countries from different continents - Europe, North America, Africa, Asia, Australia.
All of the continents, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, North America, and South America, with the exception of Antarctica, were involved in World War I.
Much of Europe was involved in and damaged by the various actions in WWII. Exceptions were Sweden, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, and The Irish Republic.
Australia's military was involved in world war two, as well as our Red cross service. Many of the soldiers wives also helped out by baking cookies and rationing and stuff like that.
