The Bible came to us first through oral tradition. Early church members began compiling simple writings about Jesus and his ministry and the early history of the church sometime in the second century. Because there were so many Christians preaching so many different messages, there was a scramble by certain church members to obtain the authentic account of Jesus' ministry. The problem with the development of orthodoxy is that the early authority showed little aptitude at investigating history objectively. What the early church desired, at least what they said they desired, were eyewitness accounts. The problem, however, was that the early church distinguished eyewitness accounts from non-eyewitness accounts or forgeries by doctrine, not objective historical methodologies. In short, what constituted an eyewitness account, was whatever happened to align with orthodox doctrine.
What we have with the Bible is religion and politicking, not history. There were historians during the second century who, by no means were perfect, showed far superior aptitude in conducting historiography. The early writings of the church should be taken with a grain of salt and their political and religious motivations should not be overlooked.
