Deborah Sampson is famous for her enlistment and service as a Revolutionary soldier from 1781 - 1783. She went by the name Robert Shurtlieff. In 1783, she became ill and her secret was discovered and she was honorably discharged. Two years later, she married Benjamin Gannet, lived as a farmer's wife and raised three children. In 1802, she went on a speaking tour, telling of her experiences. She died in 1827 at age 66 and her husband received a spousal pension based on her service.
