Haiti occupied what is now the Dominican Republic for 22 years. Dominicans during this period were oppressed by the Haitian Government (Whites were not allowed to own land, usage of the Spanish language was illegal, members of the Roman Catholic Church were expelled, heavy taxation, etc.). The Trinitarios, led by Juan Pablo Duarte, organized a rebellion against Haiti. Haiti was the very nation the Dominican Republic fought to be independant from. Great Britian is to the United States as Haiti is to the Dominican Republic.
