Study Island was invented by a company called Archipelago Learning, which was founded in 2000 by Tim McEwen. It was initially developed as a supplemental educational software for students from kindergarten to 12th grade. Archipelago Learning was later acquired by the education technology company, Edmentum, in 2012.
