Fremont was an interesting man. He was a young army officer when he went with Lewis and Clark on their corps of discovery. After he returned he was asked by the president to go into California to see what the Mexican government would do and test the waters to see how hard it would be to take California . He got a small group together and said they were a survey team. They were stopped by a Mexican patrol in San Juan Bastista and cornered on a mountain there ( today it is called Fremont state park/campground) with the Mexican army in front. Fremont and his men during the night went down the back half of the mountain and escaped. The next time he went into California was with the task to take it from the Mexican government. He went to John Sutter and asked his help in holding the governor when he captured Monterey. Sutter agreed and Fremont with his men captured Monterey and declared the Bear Flag Republic. Later, Fremont will run for president. His personal life was also rather interesting. He married a Congressmans daughter Louisa Benton and they will end up each of them living alone. She died in Columa California in a small house in the late 1800's. He will die disgrace from trying to sell a phony gold mine.
