New Jersey did have slavery and when the English took control in 1664 slaves were imported from the West Indies and Afrcia. Some Native Americans were also made slaves. Durning the American Revoultion the British offered freedom to any slaves who would fight for them and as many as 10,000 escaped slaves went to Manhatton. After the war they slaves who fought for them and remained loyal were given passage to Nova Scotia, the West Indies, and England. It wasn't until 1804 that slavery was outlawed.
