In a word, confused. No-one knew anything, and in fact, so many people had thought Stalin was a great person. Every piece of information was kept a secret in the war, so when they heard that the war ended, most had no idea why or how. That's when the USSR was truthfully falling apart. A country made on rumors is never stable.
