Sherman's total war burned every thing in his way. This meant houses, crops, and other things needed to live. The south was all ready hurting and there was a shortage of food and other things. When a population has nothing they are more than likely to surrender than to fight. Sherman was used by the president later to wage total war on the Native Americans by killing the buffalo on the plains so they would starve to death.
