A big difference between the 1939 film version of The Wizard of Oz and other movies of the time was the totalcommitment of those involved in the filming tothe very realness of the movie. As an example, the biggest item on the budget was the filming of the cyclone. Through trial and error, the filmmakers came up with a scene so real in its frightful unleashing that to this day specialists believe that the episode could have been shot during a real tornado. As another example, heroine Dorothy Gale's three friends were the walking, talking trio of the Tin Woodman, the Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion. Here again, the filmmakers sought very real costuming and make-up, even for the most irreal and unreal of characters. And so the Scarecrow's face was actually a rubber head covering that had openings that showed the actor's own eyes, mouth, and nose.
