The Vietnam War a war that changed the United States in more ways than one. The Vietnam War was able to transform policy making in the US by preventing the US from intervening in other conflicts on the Asia mainlands.

Because it changed what had been a simple guerrilla war in South Vietnam into an open conventional war in both South VN and North Vietnam. There was no open direct hostilities against NORTH Vietnam prior to the Tonkin Gulf.
The only big lesson learned was North Vietnam was not invaded. During the Korean War, N. Korea was invaded; that brought in Red China. That strategy was not repeated in the Viet War.
War has not really changed, men are still killing one another. Only the weapons and tactics have changed.
