Not all Crows used hair extensions, since many warriors were able to grow their hair naturally very long - the Mountain Crow chief known as "Long Hair" carried his hair bundled in a large package and it was variously measured at 36 feet, 10 feet, 10 feet 7 inches and 9 feet 11 inches. The warrior Pariskarupa (Two Crows) was painted by George Catlin in the 1830s with his natural hair trailing on the ground.
Since very long hair was considered handsome among Crow men, many used horsehair or human hair extensions that were assembled into 8 or 10 cords, each the width of a finger, fixed with little balls of pine gum or other tree sap, mixed with white clay or red ochre to contrast starkly with the black hair. These little balls of sap were arranged in horizontal rows across the hair which flowed to the knees or almost to the ground.
It is possible that the Indian girl was curious about the American Indian children, perhaps because they looked different and represented a cultural unfamiliarity. This curiosity may have sparked an interest in learning more about their culture and heritage. However, without more context, it is difficult to ascertain the specific thoughts and motivations of the Indian girl.
It was located on the foremast, above and behind the bridge. It was used to look out for collision hazards. Being higher up, the crewman on lookout in the crow's nest would have a better view. There was no radar in those days, and even radar did not save the liner Andrea Doria from sinking after colliding with a cargo ship in 1956. Modern ships with radar still have a crow's nest as a backup in case of systems failure. On a frigate patrolling dangerous waters, a crewman with a shoulder-launched missile may be posted in the crow's nest because....even if they call it something different today.....the concept of a crow's nest is still valid.

The original Crow homelands in the area that became southern Montana and northern Wyoming had a few major watercourses: the Missouri, the Yellowstone, the Bighorn, the Little Bighorn, Powder River and Little Missouri were all within tribal lands. In between these rivers there were very large areas of Plains with no water at all for many miles; it was possible to travel for many days without finding water. So there were certainly rivers in and around the Crow hunting grounds, but often camps would be set up far from a river in order to be close to the buffalo herds. In that sense they did not continuously "live by a river".
