The process of mummifying, preserving a person's body for the afterlife, helped advance the ancient Egyptians' knowledge of anatomy. The Egyptians removed all organs from the body and placed them in Canopic Jars, so that they could accompany the person's soul to the afterlife. The ancient Egyptians believed that when one died, their soul left their physical body, and the body needed to be preserved for the afterlife, when the soul would once again have a need for the body. Thus, all important parts of the body were preserved: the intestines, heart, lungs, and stomach. The brain, however, was not considered particularly important, for it was sucked out of the nose and discarded. Although Egyptians learned plenty from merely looking at the organs, they were not allowed to dissect or otherwise test the body parts, for this was believed to be offensive to the soul.
