Jefferson wrote in the Declaration of Independence that "all men are created equal". He was arguing that kings and lords were not born with any divine right to rule over other people, but it seems inconsistent that he would have the right to rule over his slaves just because he paid money for them or their ancestors.
Apparently he was not thinking of slaves as being men, but rather as some inferior sub-class that were designed to serve men.
