A number of people have named the monolith we now know as Devil's tower. The name it currently has was given in 1875 when the interpreter from Colonel Richard Irving Dodge's expedition misinterpreted native names for the landform as "Bad God's Tower." This became Devils Tower.

To understand this, it is necessary to go back to the beginning.

At least six Native Americans have had various names for the monolith we know as Devils Tower. These include:

  1. Arapaho - Bear's Tipi
  2. Crow - Bear's house, Bear's lair, Daxpitcheeaasáao(Home of Bears)
  3. Cheyenne - Bear's house, Bear's lair, Bear's Lodge, Bear's Tipi
  4. Kiowa - Aloft on a Rock, Tree Rock
  5. Lakota - Bear's Lodge, Bear's Lodge Butte, Grizzly Bear Lodge
  6. Shoshone - Bear's House

During the 1875 expedition to the region, Colonel Richard Irving Dodge's interpreter mistook Native American names as "Bad God Tower." This was converted to a Christian perspective by Euro-Americans to mean Devil's Tower. When the landform and the surrounding area became a National Monument, as is the practice, the possessive apostrophe was dropped.
