The Aztecs had a revelation that one of their gods, Quetzalcoatl, would return from exile in the east with white skin and a full beard in the year 1519. Coincedentally, Cortes fulfilled all of these conditions so montezuma though he was qutzalcoatl. because of this, montezma warmly welcomed Cortes and gave Cortes lots of gold, silver, and other valuables

First of all moncteuzma was not a place but a person and he did not really conquer him he kidnapped him. all the people of the village offered hernan cortes a room full of treasures and gold and in return they would get their leader back (monteuzma) hernan cortes took this offer but after he recived all of this he killed monteuzma.
