Would Richard Allen Davis have turned into a serial killer if he had not been caught?
There is no way to tell what a person will or will not do or be in the future. But we can look at his past and it can give hints to what may have happened had he not been caught when he was. Davis is the killer of Polly Klaas, of Petaluma CA, taken from her own home on Oct. 1, 1993. When Davis abducted Klaas he had been out on parole for about 60-90 days. He had at least 2 prior kidnap and attempted kidnap charges along with assault and several lesser charges. Or sometimes called a 'career criminal'. Kidnapping, especially kidnapping with a deadly weapon, is in some ways very close to homicide. It doesn't take much to cross that line, and on October1, 1993 Davis finally crossed that line. Had he not been caught for the abduction and murder of Klaas there is every chance that he would have repeated his crimes. Imprisonment was not enough to deter Davis from violence, but he most certainly did not want to go right back when being out such a short time. Short of a miracle, Davis probably would not have been able to live in society without harming someone. When finally caught 2 months after Polly's disappearance, he showed absolutely no remorse for his crime, referring to Polly in deragatory terms. He had no respect for her as a human being, she had no worth to him at all. You can't teach someone to be empathetic toward fellow humans. And Davis would not have been successfully rehabilitated.
