In Washington's day, women could not vote or run for office, Their right to own property was limited and especially so for married women. They were not allowed to go to college and most were given a very limited education . Their employment opportunities were mostly limited to unskilled labor or handy-work such as sewing.
Keeping a home running was very hard unless one had servants. Women spun thread, wove cloth, made candles, fetched and heated water, washed clothes by hand, had to cook over an open fire, killed and dressed chickens, butchered hogs .milked cows, churned butter, cured and smoked meats, tended the gardens as well as keeping the house clean and looking after the children. Many had a new baby every year.
