Edit:
People in cities lost their jobs and homes, lived in shantytowns, and got food from soup kitchens and bread lines.
Some problems city dwellers faced during the Great Depression was an extreme downturn in manufacturing jobs, which led to a loss of more than 2 million jobs. Unemployment was high and suburbia stopped growing.
Life during the great depression was bad, People lost their jobs and went into debt. People got evicted from their homes by Bailiffs, or court officials. These people became hobos and lived in shantytowns. People who blamed hoover for the GD called shantytown's hoovervilles! Many farmer stopped planting and left their farms which would turn into dust bowls, they went to California in search for a better life but it wasn't so different than their farms. A lot of people went to watch movies, and soap operas to escape the GD because they felt better watching it. Novelists influenced literature because they wrote about people's life during the GD. Art also showed people how others had a bad life and same with art which showed traditional American values, but mostly rural Americans in the Midwest and south. So yea, life was pretty bad in the 1930's during the Great Depression.
In the United States, the Great Depression of the 1930's were especially hard on US cities:
A. The cities were the centers of manufacturing, with the closing of many city based businesses, unemployment was especially high.
B. The Depression suppressed any new businesses to begin and develop; money was tight and with such a poor economy, few enterprises would take a chance as the Depression could become worse.
C. People who worked on farms were also affected as prices for their products was low, however, these people always had food, not always the case in hard hit cities.
