How was solar energy used in the past?

Solar energy was used because it was free and convenient. We planted crops and fruit trees where they would grow in the sun. The sun and the wind dried our clothes after washing.

The sun was also used just to keep us warm. When you sit in the sun you are using solar energy to do just that. People built their houses facing the sun, if possible, to warm them.

Now houses are designed with their windows facing the sun, to take advantage of solar energy.
