Great Britain was the principal country on the Allied Side of WWII. They issued a guarantee to Poland promising to declare war on Germany if Germany attacked Poland. When Germany invaded Poland in September of 1939, they declared war on Germany. They despatched an Expeditionary force of over 400,000 to France to take part in Campaigns against Germany. When France came under German attack in April 1940, the BEF was nearly destroyed, escaping back to England from Dunkirk. During the summer of 1940, Britain came under heavy air attack from Germany. In addition, Britains holdings in North Africa were attacked by Italian and German forces.

In 1941, many British holding in the Pacific fell to attacks by Japan.

In summer of 1941, Germany abandoned its plans of a cross channel attack against Britain, instead focusing on an invasion of Russia. In 1942, a major British victory at El-Alamein thwarted the German advance in North Africa.

British forces in North Africa teamed with US forces there to sweep the Germans and Italians from the continent. In 1943, the British took part in the Allied invasion of Italy.

In June of 1944, British forces made up about 30 percent of the Normandy landing force, and they marched together with the American forces through France and Germany, eventually forcing German surrender
