The vast majority of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) in the years 1847-1910 traveled to and settled in Utah. At the time, converts to the church were expected to move to Utah if possible. They moved there any way they could afford - by foot, handcart, horse, or wagon until 1870, and typically by train after that time. Since World War 1, converts to Mormonism are encouraged to stay in their hometowns rather than move to Utah.
From the Salt Lake Valley, many continued due west, right through the Great Basin region. Others headed due south through what is now Las Vegas, to the southern part of what is now California. The Oregon Trail and The California Trail are often collectively refrerred to as The Emigrant Trail.
While it depends on the season and mode of travel, it was difficult and dangerous for everyone. There were very few trading posts, and in many places the trail was so over-used that it was difficult to find grazing places for the animals and game to hunt. Large canyons with no establshed trails were very complicated to navigate with large pack animals and wagons filled with supplies. All the while, children, sick people, and the elderly had to be cared for. Those traveling too late in the season suffered many deaths due to starvation and freezing temperatures.
Mostly by wagon, although some came by handcart, horse, or on foot. later they came by train, and now the come by car or plane.
