WWI is considered to be the first total war. In WWI, both sides, Germany and France/Britain were attempting to kill civilians and people who supported the enemy. Both sides tried to bleed the other side to death. Both sides also tried coming up with weapons that would damage the enemy. Britain made the first tank, Germany made the first U-boat as well as poison gas.
