Joseph was the legal father of Jesus but not the biological father. Jesus' mother, Mary, was a virgin when she gave birth to Jesus. The child, Jesus, was conceived in her by the power of the Holy Spirit so God was the Father of Jesus. There are many times in The Bible where God gave children to women who had previously been infertile. Some of them were Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, Hannah. Nothing is impossible with God! In the case of Mary, it was an even greater miracle since God bypassed the normal means of conception completely. This was to fulfill the promise God made to Adam and Eve in Genesis, chapter 3, when He said that the "seed of the woman" (Mary's son, Jesus) would crush the head of the serpent (the devil).
