The first computer network was developed by IBM and AT&T for the US Air Force SAGE air defense system of 26 sites (52 computers) interconnected by dedicated leased phone lines. The AN/FSQ-7 vacuum tube computers were connected to the leased phone lines by the first modems ever built. IBM developed all the software and hardware in this system. It operated from roughly 1958 until 1986, when the last pair of AN/FSQ-7 computers were retired.

The AN/FSQ-7 computer was the largest (physically) computer ever built and was probably the last original first generation computer type shut down.
